Loss Of Kairana: Will Modi Remove Yogi From The CM Post?
Kairana gave yet another jolt to BJP in UP, which was trying to get rid of the shocks it had got in Phulpur and Gorakhpur. The defeat of Gorakhkpur was very shocking for the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who along with his Guru Avaidyanath was holding that constituency for the last 29 years.
Anyway, Kairana had given an opportunity to Yogi to salvage his prestige, which was hurt when his party lost the above said two bypolls. But, the victory proved illusory once again. Not only Kairana, but also the Noorpur Assembly constituency was lost by BJP. Both these constituencies were held by the ruling party and the bypolls were necessitated due to the death of sitting BJP law makers.
From the very beginning, Kairana was a difficult constituency for the saffron party. It was facing a united opposition there. Rashtriya Lok Dal had fielded its candidate and she was being supported by Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Congress. A family member of the RLD candidate Tabassum Hassan was also in the fray, but he withdrew in favour of the combined opposition candidate making the task of BJP candidate more difficult.
After the defeat of Phulpur and Gorakhpur, Chief Minister Adityanath had explained that they were overconfident of their win and that was the reason for their defeat. But, BJP was never overconfident of its victory in Kairana and it still lost the constituency, which had become a laboratory for the opposition to experiment their unity.
BJP had scored historic victory in the Assembly elections of the state last year and no one was projected as the CM face of BJP then. Obviously, BJP was not fighting under the leadership of Adityanath Yogi. He was a later discovery of the party for the post of the Chief Minister.
Under the leadership of Yogi, BJP is losing one election after another. It had got 71 Lok Sabha seats on its symbol and have only 68 of them now. It is more than clear that he cannot ensure the win of BJP candidates.
Uttar Pradesh is very important for BJP in the next Lok Sabha elections. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi is an MP from this state. It sends 80 MPs in Lok Sabha. If it loses here, it cannot dream of getting majority on its own in Lok Sabha after 2019 elections. In fact, The performance of 2014 Lok Sabha election was matched by the performance of 2017 Assembly elections.
But after the installation of Adityanath Yogi as the CM of the state, the down slide of BJP has begun. Many instances of Yogi regime have given bad image of not only the Yogi government, but also the saffron party also. The latest news of gang rape of a minor girl in Unnao district by a BJP MLA and his men painted the whole government in black colour because the administration seemed to be saving the rapist MLA and the MLA- Police nexux killed the father of the girl.
There are resentments against Yogi within BJP and his opponents want him to be replaced by someone else. After the defeat in Kairana and Noorpur, they will become more vocal and active against him. The national leaders of BJP, too, would like to effect necessary changes to win 2019 elections in UP. Hence, there is possibility of change in regime in Uttar Pradesh.
